Prof. Françoise Gray
Neuropathologist

Professor Françoise Gray is Head of the Anatomy and Cytopathology Unit and Head of the Laboratories, Imaging and Pharmacy Centre at Lariboisière Hospital. She is Professor of Pathology and Coordinator of the University Department of Histology and Pathology at the Denis Diderot University. She is a member of the Inserm E0011 Team at the Faculty of Medicine in Créteil.

Her main interest lies in neuropathology and, more particularly, in infectious diseases of the nervous system and the mechanisms of neuronal death. She has been President of the French Neuropathology Society (Société Française de Neuropathologie) and of the International Society of Neuropathology. She has been project leader for a number of joint European projects on AIDS-related lesions of the nervous system and has personally researched brain lesions occurring in HIV patients in the early, asymptomatic stages of the disease. More recently, she has researched brain lesions during the restoration of immunity to patients treated with multitherapy. She has been responsible for several studies showing that neuronal loss during HIV-related encephalopathy, prion-related diseases and, recently, CADASIL, results from an active process of programmed cell death or apoptosis. She is a member of numerous scientific societies and editorial committees of international journals. She has published 5 books and more than 300 articles in every area of neuropathology
